80 cm3 of water takes 12 min to cool from 40?C to 15?C in a draft; it is contained in a copper calorimeter of mass 150 g and specific heat 0.1 cal*g-1*K-1. The same volume of a dilute suspension of ceramic particles in alcohol, density 0.8 g/cm?3, takes 8 min to cool from 40?C to 15?C in the same draft, using the same calorimeter.

(a) Show that in both cases the time it takes to cool from 40?C to 15?C is in proportion to the heat capacity.

(b) Calculate the specific heat of the suspension in SI units.
