Consider a mountain range that has been uplifting at a rate of 10 m/Myr for the past 5 Myr. Assume that the top of the range is still flat (a remnant of the gently sloping rocky landscape that existed before uplift began) and has not undergone significant erosion since uplift began. Estimate the thickness of the soil at the top of the mountain range (P0 = 0.04 m/kyr is a reasonable value for the production rate of soil). The slope has steepened sufficiently on the side of the mountain range to come into a steady state with tectonic uplift. Estimate the soil thickness on the side of the mountain.
