Filter Design in PowerFactory
Question 1:
Import the Filter_Design_Industry_Network.pfd model and go to the red marked area of the model as shown in the below figure. Activate a case by right-clicking and select activate.
a) To learn how to import a model in Powerfactory, read the ImportingandExportingaProject.pdf file
b) To learn about harmonic analysis, associated plotting and adding results of multiple simulations on the same figure, go to the below link.
c) Both Rectifier DC Motor 1 and 2 are active. Before running the simulation, make sure you watch the video as given in the previous step.
d) Click Calculate Harmonic Power Flow and then click Execute.
e) Add the plots for total harmonic distortion (THD).
f) Set the current limit according to IEC 61000-3-6 (2008) and voltage range applicable for your model. Does it satisfy the harmonic distortion limit according to the standard on both buses?
g) If the design limit is violated then design a filter that makes the THD within the standard limit. Use a single tined type filter. Click Drawing Tools from the left of the software window>Shunts and Filters>RLC, drag and drop in the model. Make sure the lock is open to make any changes in the model.
1. Calculate the required MVar capacity.
2. Show the impedance measurement plot.
3. Mention the number, rated capacity and order of your designed filter(s).
4. Show the THD plot with the filter.
You need to find the impedance at fundamental frequency to calculate the required MVar. Click Calculate Impedance Frequency
Characteristics>Execute.
Plot the result to find the impedance value.
h) Now change the 6-pulse rectifier to 12-pulse rectifier for both Rectifier DC motors. Open the Rectifier DC Motor 1. Go to the Power Quality/Harmonics tab>Select Harmonic Spectrum to User defined and follow the below screenshots. Select Global Type....
i) Add the plots for total harmonic distortion (THD) when Rectifier DC Motor 1 is connected and both Rectifier DC Motor 1 and Rectifier DC Motor 2 are connected with and without filter(s). Explain the changes in the THD performance as opposed to the 6-pulse rectification.
1. THD plot without filter
2. Calculate the required MVar capacity.
3. Mention the number, rated capacity and order of your designed filter(s).
4. Show the THD plot with the filter.
j) What is the THD in percentage for 6 pulse and 12 pulse bridge rectifier at Bus 7 with and without the filters? Does the type of rectifier pulse have any impact on the filter? If yes, what is the impact?
k) Do the harmonic orders for 6 pulse and 12 pulse bridge rectifiers from your simulation results above verify the theritical harmonic orders? How?
l) Self-reflect on the below points:
How did I ensure that the project met the necessary standards and requirements, and what did I learn about quality assurance processes?
What responsibilities have I taken on in this assessment? How have I ensured that I have met the requirements and standards expected of me? Have I taken accountability for any mistakes or shortcomings, and how have I learned from them?
