In a population of mice you discover a rare autosomally-inherited trait in which the homozygous recessive genotype results in an extreme intelligence (think Algernon). After an extensive trapping project involving students from your Zoology class, you find that, on average, only 4 mice in 1 million show this Einstein phenotype. The academic community is all abuzz about your discovery and wishes to establish a laboratory colony of these brilliant mice. The director of the National Science Foundation asks you to calculate the probability that any mouse caught at random in your area is a phenotypically normal carrier of this "Einstein" trait.

a. Calculate the probability for all genotypes and specify the frequency for which he is interested.

b. If the population from 2a is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, what will be the frequency of the Einstein allele in the gene pool of this population 100 years in the future?

c. If scientists are capturing and testing mice and keeping those that are brilliant for laboratory breeding, what will happen to the frequency of brilliant mice in the wild population?

d. Which assumption, if any, is being violated in scenario 2c with respect to the wild population?
