Dry air at 1-atm pressure and a velocity of 15 m/s is to be humidified by passing it in cross flow over a porous cylinder of diameter D = 40 mm, which is saturated with water.

(a) Assuming the water and air to be at 300 K, calculate the mass rate of water evaporated under steady-state conditions from the cylindrical medium per unit length.

(b) How will the evaporation rate change if the air and water are maintained at a higher temperature? Generate a plot for the temperature range 300 to 350 K to illustrate the effect of temperature on the evaporation rate.
