Correlation between hand calculation/MatLab code and industrial finite element software
A simple beam' steel structure consists of four steel members clamped at (A) and (E).
• (AB) and (DE) are beams
• (BC) and (CD) are rods
The structure is subjected to a 10kN vertical load in the -Y direction at point C (Figure 1).
Question 1: Perform a hand calculation/MatLab routine to predict:
a. Calculate the mass of the structure
b. The vertical and horizontal displacements at point C
c. The rotations at point B and D
You are asked to derive the basic matrices and implement a Hand calculation/Matlab programme, which would characterise the 'I beam' assembly
Question 2: Perform a computer model of this structure using FEA software and compare its results against question 1 a), b) and c). (Relevant computer snapshots and a summary table are

A 15 page report including relevant free body diagrams, Excel matrices snapshots as well as pictures of the relevant FEA software results (in white background) and the Hand calculation/Matlab file. The report must conclude with a comparison table between the 2 methods and comment on the potential differences between the analytical methods and hand calculation. Any report exceeding 15 pages will have a 5-mark penalty, as well as having the extra pages not considered.
