A disc 40 cm in diameter and 5 cm thick is to be cast using pure aluminium in an open mould operation. The melting point of aluminium is 660°C, and the pouring temperature will be 800°C.

Calculate: a) The mould dimensions

b) Heat involved in the process, given that heat of fusion for aluminium is 390 kJ/kg

c) Perform the calculation in (a) for gray cast iron, mild steel and copper. Assume pouring temperature is 140°C above the melting point.
