1. Two cars collide at an icy intersection and stick together afterward. The first car has a mass of 1450 kg and was approaching at 8.00 m/s due south. The second car has a mass of 900 kg and was approaching at 18.0 m/s due west.

a) Calculate the final velocity (magnitude in m/s and direction in degrees counterclockwise from the west) of the cars. (Note that since both cars have an initial velocity, you cannot use the equations for conservation of momentum along the x-axis and y-axis;instead, you must look for other simplifying aspects.)

magnitude ___________m/s

direction ____________degrees counterclockwise from west

b) How much kinetic energy (in J) is lost in the collision? (This energy goes into deformation of the cars.) ___________J

2. What is the acceleration (in m/s2) of a 6000-kg rocket taking off from the Moon, where the acceleration due to gravity is only 1.6 m/s2, if the rocket expels 8.50 kg of gas per second at an exhaust velocity of 2.20 ? 103 m/s?

____________m/s^2

3. A rocket with a mass of 66,000 kg (including fuel) is burning fuel at the rate of 150 kg/s and the speed of the exhaust gases is 6,000 m/s. If the rocket is fired vertically upward from the surface of the Earth, determine its height after 1,190 kg of its total fuel load has been consumed. Since the mass of fuel consumed is small compared to the total mass of the rocket, you can consider the mass of the rocket to be constant for the time interval of interest.

__________m
