Assignment Title: Ship design and construction
Learning outcome - Understand basic vessel construction, design, materials and methods.
Describe the stages of ship design from concept to delivery.
Explain different materials and methods of ship construction.
Explain the structural components and their functions in the construction of different ships.
Scenario -
As a naval architect you have been instructed by your client, a first time vessel owner, who wishes to be involved in world-wide general cargo trade operating a multi-purpose vessel to design and oversee the building of his new vessel.
As a new vessel owner your client wants to be informed of all the stages involved in bringing the vessel from the concept design stage to the final delivery by the shipyard after completing successful sea-trials.
At the final design stage you will have obtained main dimensions for the new vessel.
1. Using these dimensions and in anticipation of preparing the statutory "Stability" information/booklet calculate the following, explaining to your client the reason and significance of these numbers.
a. the block co-efficient
b. the prismatic co-efficient
c. The midship area co-efficient. (make sure you show all the calculation workings)
2. In consultation with your client and building yard personnel discuss, using visual aids where appropriate, possible and preferred materials of construction, types of construction, build methods. (Use any building yard in any country of your choice)
3. Explain the national and/or international rules and regulations that may apply to the building of this type and size of commercial vessel?
4. Develop a bar graph to demonstrate to your client the build sequence and time frame of building such a vessel from start (signing of the contract) to final delivery of the vessel.
