You take a small section of leaf and view it underneath a microscope. You count 25 stomata. Now you want to calculate how many stomata would be in a leaf the size of a penny.

a) Calculate the area of the view of view (A=πr2) if the diameter of the FOV is 4mm.

b) Calculate the area of a penny (A=πr2) if the penny's diameter is 19mm.

c) Finally, set up a ratio of your knowns to solve for your unknown, the number of stomata in a leaf the size of a penny (X). # stomata in field of view = X area of field of view area of penny
