Quantitative Methods
Assessment - Descriptive Data Analysis
Assessment Description
Stage 1: Individual analysis
Duration: Students will have a window of time to complete statistical analysis of data.
Topics assessed may include Weeks 1 to 4:
Week 1: Data, sampling methods and summarization
Week 2: Charts and descriptive statistics
Week 3: Probability and discrete probability distributions
Week 4: Continuous distributions
Week 5: Sampling distributions
The suggested 1st classes for each variable MAY not fit YOUR sample of data. IF that is the case for YOUR SAMPLE of data, please, create YOUR own classes for variables, as needed:
Best to have 5 or more classes.
So, we can create classes by:
1. Calculate range for your sample of data, max - min
2. Decide how many classes would be suitable e.g.: 5 or 6 etc.
3. Class width = range/number of classes
4. Round up class width to a value that seems reasonable to you.
5. Ensure your classes capture your min and max value.
NOTE: If you start wanting 5 classes but then need to use 6 classes, to capture the min and max values, that is ok.
Stage 2: Individual report
Assessment Instructions
STARTS in Week 6 out of class and ends in Week 7 in class.
Require: laptop, calculator with square and square-root function, formulae sheet and statistical tables. Software such as Excel online, Tableau Public or Power BI can be used to produce results in class.
