Learning Outcome 1: Calculate probabilities of different types of events.
Learning Outcome 2: Compute probabilities using discrete probability distributions and continuous probability distributions.
Assignment Objective
To assess learning emphasized on basic concepts of probability and probability distribution, problem solving skills and the ability to apply this knowledge in Business.
Assignment Tasks
Task 1: Answer the following:
Social media become an important communication tool during coronavirus pandemic. Make a short survey among 15 students (male and female) of "Which Social Media Application they liked best: WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, or Snapchat". You should use online survey tools (for example survey monkey or google forms).
a. Give the link of online survey and summarize the data in the following table.

b. What is the probability that a respondent is male, given their favorite media is WhatsApp?
c. What is the probability that a respondent is female, or their favorite media is Snapchat?
d. What is the probability that a Twitter is not their favorite media?
Task 2: Answer the following:
a. Let X be a discrete random variable with probability distribution function f(x) = k(x2 + B) and X = -1, 1, 2, 3.
i. Find the value of k.
ii. Find the Variance of X.
b. Let X denote a discrete random variable which can take the values -2,0, and 5. Given that the expectation of X is A/100 and P(X = -2) = A/B, find P(X = ??).
Task 3: Answer the following:
a. A coin is tossed A times. Calculate the probability of obtaining more tails than heads.
b. A production engineer found that a particular manufacturing process causes defects in A of every B components. Eight of these components are examined, what is the probability that at least two of these components have defects?
Task 4: Answer the following:
a. Suppose that the grades of Business Mathematics and Statistic module is modeled well by a normal probability distribution with mean (150 + A) and standard deviation (60 + A). Let X be the random variable representing this distribution. Find two symmetric values "a" and "b" such that
Probablity [a < X < b ] = 0.99 , where a = -b
b. The life expectancy of people in Oman is normally distributed. If the mean and standard deviation is (100 + B) years and (40 + B) years, respectively, find the probability that the life expectancy is between (80 + B) and (52 + B) years.
