Assignment - Wind Turbines a Source for Producing Renewable Energy
Introduction: Green energies such as wind, solar, biomass are contributing significantly to the UK's energy supply. Wind energy is with circa 13 percent (around 5 GW) the largest source of green energy in the UK.
Aim: Optimise a wind turbine and its power output.
Objectives: Measure the wind turbine output.
Optimise wind turbine power output.
Calculate the max energy which can be produced by the wind turbine.
Instructions -
1) The case study includes:
a. Research about SFEE.
b. Applying the knowledge from the lectures and solve the open-ended engineering challenge: Predict the max possible energy which can be extracted from the wind turbine.
c. Evaluate experimental data and compare with predicted data.
2) Individual report -
The report will include the findings from the literature survey and analysis of experimental results plus equations/calculations. The maximum page number of the report is 6 pages (Note: additional information and graphs can be provided in the appendix.)
Section A of the individual report -
a) Research about SFEE and wind turbines which could include following points:
- Applicability of SFEE and limitations
- Dimensionless numbers for wind turbine design/calculations
- Social and environmental challenges
Section B of the individual report -
The discussion of experimental results:
- Estimate wind power
- Calculate efficiencies
Note: The submission of our individual re ort should contain the following:
i) a brief outline of relevant theory (e.g. SFEE calculations)
ii) a results and calculations section containing:
- equations and tables generated for plotting the results (can be attached in the appendix of the document).
- numerical verification of any such tables by providing calculations for a representative sample of derived data (using the equation editor).
(iii) a discussion and conclusions (including:)
- a discussion of possible sources of error and their significance; you are expected to use the Excel spreadsheet to support your discussions (add to appendix).
- a general discussion on the relationship between experiment and theory as evidenced by your results.
- the relationship between the concepts explored and practical applications.
