A Travel-Cost Example
Now it is time for your first consulting job as an environmental economist. The Forest Service would like to know whether it should set aside some national forestland, previously slated to be logged, for hiking. You are helping with a travel-cost analysis to estimate the benefits of setting aside the land. Survey data have been gathered from 500 hikers who visited a forest in a neighboring state. Using a statistical technique called regression analysis, you have controlled for differences in income, employment status, age, and other important factors that might affect the number of hiking trips taken. Taking these factors into account, you have developed the following relationship:
1. Graph the demand curve for hiking trips as a function of the "price"-the travel cost.
2. Based on demographic information about the people living in the vicinity of the proposed park, you have estimated that 50,000 people will take an average of four hiking trips per year. For the average person, calculate
(1) the consumer surplus for a single visit to the new park;
(2) the total consumer surplus for an average visitor (Hint: the area of a triangle is 1/2[B * H]); and (3) the total expected consumer surplus per year from the proposed park.
An incumbent in an industry faces the possibility of entry by a challenger. First the challenger chooses whether or not to enter. If it does not enter, neither firm has any further action; the incumbent's payoff is TM (it obtains the profit M in e..
In a competitive market, the market-determined price is $60. For a typical firm producing 100 units of output, short-run marginal cost is constant at $65, average total cost is $95, and average fixed cost is $30. Is this firm making the profit-max..
Suppose that demand for cartel's oil is given by P=50-.1Q where P is the price per barrel and Q is the quantity produced in barrels. If the cartel's aggregate marginal cost is given by MC= 10+0.2Q what is the cartel's profit maximizing price of oi..
Where will the price settle in the long run Remember, all purely competitive firms are theoretically doomed to make only normal profit in the long run. 4. Why is the long-run equilibrium position of a purely competitive firm productively and alloca..

The firm currently uses 50,000 workers to produce 200,000 units of output per day. The daily wage per worker is $80, & the price of the firm's output id $25. The cost of other variable inputs is $400,000 per day. Assume that total fixed cost equal..
Why does prohibiting it often work better in theory than in practice?
Assume the company orders printer paper in truckloads of 10,000 boxes every 3 weeks. They pay $20.00 per unit and it costs $200 to place the physical order. In addition, the cost of capital is 20% per year and the annual holding cost
