(a) How do the relative rates of return on Social Security payroll taxes compare for the two families? (b) After the kids go off to college, Mr. Long considers working a part time job. How might the Social Security System of taxes and benefits affect his decision? (c) Assume both the Ducas and Longs have retired and they are receiving Social Security benefits. By what fraction will these benefits fall for each of these families if one member of the household dies? What implications does this have for relative consumption smoothing in these households?

7. The Social Security Administration website has a link to a publication entitled Social Security Programs throughout the World. The European version. Pick any two countries in Europe and compare the key attributes of their social security programs. Which of these two countries do you think will have the greater rate of early retirement? Why?

8. Ben earns $12 per hour if he works and can work at most 24 hours a day for the 30 days in a month. (a) Draw his budget constraint to show the monthly consumption-leisure trade off. (b) Suppose the government introduces a welfare program that guarantees $600 per month in income and reduces the benefit by $1 for each $1 of labor income. Draw Ben's new budget constraint. You must include labels and exact numbers on the axes in order to receive full credit.

Genovia provides a $5,000 exemption per family member. If Mariela's family has two members and earns $60,000 per year, calculate the family's marginal and average tax rates.
