The bystander effect is a puzzling phenomenon that can cause a group of individuals to avoid aiding a person in need thinking that someone else int the group will instead step up and aid the person. This effect can lead to the victim to suffer for a prolonged period and may even lead to the victim dying or suffering more severe injuries. This effect increases as the number of spectators does since, they all believe that someone else will take charge or has already reached out for help. This effect can be different case by case since in some circumstances less bystanders mean the likely hood of someone stepping will be higher but there are still many outliers such as a person stopping the assailant while a crowd of 50 people watch on. This is risky for the bystander who steps in since they may also become a victim and with this mentality many people will just wait for help to arrive and watch on in shock. Overall this effect has been documented to be pretty clear cut meaning that most of the time in cases with a lot of spectators the bystander effect will hold and the victim will suffer for longer even if asking for aid from the crowd however the timing in when certain people will step in without being asked and when asked will differ meaning that the bystander effect is not omnipotent and some individuals will not be entranced and sit on the sidelines to watch. This effect is important when considering certain areas of the country for example in New York city less people are likely to step in if the assault is in a bad neighborhood known to be dangerous and filled with crime. However, if an incident occurs on a campus in north Florida of a good university and the crowd is 10 people the victim is more likely to receive aid due to the environment and the crowd around them.
