Oxygen gas initially at 300 K and 100 kPa is contained in a rigid tank. Two alternative processes are to be considered to increase its temperature to 500 K. The gas receives the energy

(a) adiabatically by means of a paddle wheel driven by an external source and

(b) by means of an external heat reservoir at 600 K. In the second case the temperature at the boundary is taken to be the gas temperature throughout the process. Determine the following: 1). the exergy change ,2) the irreversibility, 3). the effectiveness of the overall process for each of the two parts of the problem. Use an environment at 300 K, 100 kPa, V= 0 m/s and Z = sea level .
