Assessment: Identity Box - Teaching Philosophy & Professional Identity
Topic: Teaching Philosophy & Professional Identity
Task Description
Record a short video of 6 minutes (along with a written transcript), presenting your identity box - teaching philosophy and professional identity.
You have just been appointed as an early childhood teacher in a community-based preschool. During your first week, the Director invites all educators to bring an "Identity Box" to the staff meeting.
Step 1: Build a Strong Identity Box (Physical Box)
Have a physical box where you can put your artefacts in.
Carefully choose intentional artefacts that represent the story of who you are in this journey of becoming an early childhood teacher.
Tips for Choosing Meaningful Artefacts (Quality Over Quantity)
A childhood photo.
A cultural item from home (e.g., a traditional object, festival item, artwork, or food-related item). This may also support discussions around Cross Cultural Communication.
A book you value (children's book, textbook, or novel) plus one key quote that shapes your teaching beliefs.
An item showing relationships/care (e.g., a card, small gift, photo with a mentor, or something that represents belonging).
A language item (e.g., a bilingual storybook, word/phrase in your home language, name story, or a letter/character that is meaningful).
An inclusion/access item (e.g., visual schedule, key word sign, sensory tool, calm-down strategy card, or a symbol of supporting diverse learners).
A future-aspiration item (e.g., a graduation photo, a goal statement, a teacher badge/lanyard, or a symbol of the educator you want to become).
An open-ended toy (e.g., wooden blocks, figurines, scarves, magnetic tiles, or natural materials like shells/pinecones).
Any other items suitable for your identity box.
Step 2: Prepare the Slides
Introduction Slide
Who you are.
Context (new early childhood teacher, and why you're doing this presentation).
Overview of Identity Box
Purpose of the box.
One Artefact Per Slide - Explain:
What it is.
Why you chose it, with clear links to your teaching identity, beliefs, values, experiences, and emerging philosophy.
How it links with both frameworks, theoretical perspectives, and implications for practice, including aspects of Communication Strategy.
Conclusion
Your aspirations.

Step 3: Recording Your Video
How to Upload Your Video Report
Use any platform to create your slides with in-built video recording (PowerPoint, Canva, etc.) and then submit a link to your video.
Upload a Word document containing your written script/transcript of the presentation, with a link to your video. Consider how your developing professional identity connects with concepts related to Organization Behavior.
