Assignment: Using Qualitative Research Approaches in an Individual Project
Purpose
The purpose of this assessment is to help students apply qualitative research approaches to their own research projects. Students will review recent qualitative studies to understand the methods used, their rationale, and practical challenges. They will then reflect on how these techniques can be implemented effectively in their own research. Related concepts in research approaches and defining research objectives may support the development of this assessment.
Task Description: This is an individual assignment. You are required to:
Connect qualitative approaches to your research context
Briefly describe your current or potential research project (topic, aims, research questions, context).
Discuss how a range of qualitative research approaches covered in the course (e.g., case study, ethnography, grounded theory, phenomenology, discourse/narrative analysis) could potentially be applied to this project.
Explain the relevance and suitability of each approach in relation to your topic.
Select and explore one or more approaches in depth
Choose one or more qualitative approaches that are most suitable for your project.
Provide a detailed discussion of how these would be applied to your project, including:
Research design (e.g., sampling, data collection methods, data analysis strategies).
Merits of the approach (e.g., depth of insight, alignment with research questions, capacity to capture complexity).
Challenges and limitations (e.g., feasibility, ethical considerations, time, resources).
You may also refer to concepts related to develop research plan and interpreting and report findings while discussing qualitative research implementation.
Reflect on methodological decision-making
Critically reflect on why the chosen approach is appropriate.
Discuss how it compares with alternative approaches you considered but did not select.
Identify the potential contributions and limitations of using this approach in your research field.
Use of AI in Supporting the Selection of an Appropriate Research Method
This section should briefly explain how AI assisted the decision-making process, critically reflect on its benefits and limitations, and clearly demonstrate that final methodological choices were made by the student and supported by academic literature, in line with academic integrity and AI-use policies.
Suggested Structure: (also include cover page, executive summary and table of content)
Introduction
Introduce your research project briefly (topic, aims, questions).
State the purpose of the essay (to examine how qualitative approaches could be applied).
Provide a roadmap of the sections.
Overview of Qualitative Approaches
Outline 3-4 qualitative research approaches studied in the course.
Briefly explain each approach's principles, strengths, and weaknesses.
Link each approach to your research topic - how could it (or could it not) be applied?
Application of Chosen Approach(es)
Select one or more approaches for deeper analysis.
Explain how you would apply it in your project:
Research design (sampling, participants, context).
Data collection methods.
Data analysis steps.
Discuss the merits of this approach for your research.
Discuss the challenges and difficulties (practical, ethical, contextual).
Methodological Reflection
Compare your chosen approach with others you considered.
Justify why your chosen approach is the most suitable.
Reflect on what using this approach would contribute to your project (depth of insights, new perspectives).
Consider limitations: what might this approach not allow you to see or do?
Conclusion
Summarise key insights: how qualitative approaches can be applied, why one is most suitable, and what challenges exist.
End with a reflection on how this exercise informs your future research practice.
