Problem -
Consider a typical conveyor line used for automating a manufacturing process. It is required to transport components and stop them at predefined points on the conveyor for specific tasks, such as inspection. This should involve waiting for a specific time before moving on to the next stage. The number of components processed will also be counted.
Tasks -
You will be shown the available system, feedback devices and PLC equipment during the hand-out session.
You will define an automation task that makes use of sensors, switches and push-buttons and a conveyor belt. You will also write a PLC logic to control this process, this should include the use of timers and counters. You will then write the PLC logic to control this process and a simple HMI to provide the interaction.
Summarise your work with a brief report with approximately 5 pages of write-up and no more than 10 pages. Also write a clear operating manual (separate from the brief report) that can be read by the end-user for safe operation of the PLC. Your report must include the following
Your report should be considered as a "technical report" to management, so the introduction should not include general information about PLCs.
1) Problem statement, defining the parameters of the control system, supported by a table listing:
a. each system input
b. each input type (e.g. normally open push-button, normally closed limit switch, etc.)
c. the device tag for each input
d. each system output (e.g. motor coil, etc.)
e. each output type
f. the device tag for each output
2) A brief description of the logic to be controlled by the PLC.
3) The logic used to control the process with suitable brief annotation.
4) A simple HMI suitable for testing the logic and brief description of the features.
5) A clear and functional operating manual.
