Huxley meant when he believed that the brain functions as a "reducing value" is that there is a filter when it comes to our brain and nervous system. This only allows our brain to use the part of our mind that let's us focus on basic survival and everyday needs. When this filter is temporarily shut down by a psychedelic drug it allows our brain to open up to what it fully has to offer to view the world and ourselves in a completely different perspective. In the Time article they explain that they see big decreases in activity in our brains :default network" when being on psychedelics. This "default network" is basically our where our ego and perception of self lies. When on psychedelics/mushrooms its dissolves this network, our ego and self perception. I definitely find similarities between the two because both are temporarily letting down a guard of what our brain is trained in. Well basically deactivating it and opening a new perspective we are not able to see when it is active which is why i also find this comparison significant.
