Pesticide resistance is a biological indicator of genetic changes that have already occurred in a population, and as such, is a phenomenon that deserves further study. However, pesticide resistance and cross-resistance may have extremely significant ecological impacts on fish and wildlife populations. Biomagnification, an increased level of contamination in organisms that feed higher in the food chain, occurs in many species. Predators generally accumulate greater body burdens of contaminants than primary consumers. If a resistant prey population can store more of a toxic chemical, predators will biomagnify a much larger amount in their bodies while feeding on contaminated prey. Consumption of resistant prey may cause death or other adverse effects in the predator.
