Diet Project
1) PROTEIN NEEDS:
The best way to determine protein need is to calculate your RDA based on your current weight. If your weight is not ideal, you may choose to use your ideal weight in this calculation. Use the following formula to calculate your RDA for protein. Show your work for grading purposes.
2) PROTEIN INTAKE: Scroll down your All Daily Report to find Bar Graph Report. Look at the nutrient column to find the "protein (g)". The number to the right in the "Value" column indicates your average daily protein intake (in grams). The number in the next column "DRI Goal" should be similar to your calculated RDA from Question 1. First, compare your intake amount to your DRI/RDA and discuss. Next, regardless of your intake, use the text to describe two risks of consuming excess protein.
3) PROTEIN TYPES:
Review your text to understand the difference between high and low quality proteins. Scroll down your All Daily Report to find Spreadsheet Report. The Prot (g) column in the first table indicates the amount of protein that you consumed in each of your meal items. Based on your understanding of high and low quality proteins from your text, identify THREE examples of high quality (complete) protein items and THREE examples of low quality (incomplete) protein items.
4) SODIUMINTAKE:
Scroll down your All Daily Report to find Bar Graph Report. Look at the nutrient column to find "sodium (mg). The second column "value" indicates your average daily sodium intake (in grams). Enter this number below and compare it to your DRIGoal for sodium.
5) HIGHEST SODIUM ITEMS.
Scroll down your All Daily Report to find Spreadsheet Report and table with the heading below. The "Sod(mg)" column indicates the amount of sodium in each of your meal items.
List the three different meal items that contributed the most sodium to your overall diet. Identify a similar and lower sodium item or alternate preparation method which you might choose instead.
6) VITAMINS and MINERALS
Scroll down your All Daily Report to find Bar Graph Report. Look at the nutrient column to find the listing under Vitamins and Minerals. The Percent column indicates whether you were above or below the recommended intake levels. Address the following points in the table below:
• LIST ALL of the vitamins and minerals for which your PERCENT was less than 80% of the DRI Goal. Be sure to look at both pages of the report.
NOTE: If you have fewer than six vitamins or minerals that are less than 80%, choose the six vitamins or minerals that deviate the most from 100% DRI. You need to list a minimum of six vitamins or minerals to earn full credit.
DESCRIBE a function for each of the above vitamins and minerals. Be sure to describe the details in your own words in order to demonstrate your understanding of each function.
• LIST a good food source for each of your low nutrients; select foods you enjoy.
