Question

According to Behavior Modification: Principles and Procedures, "Scientific research has established a number of basic principles that explain the behavior of people and other animals. Reinforcement is one of the first basic principles that were systematically investigated by behavioral scientists, and it is a component of many applications of behavior modification described in this text. Reinforcement is the process in which a behavior is strengthened by the immediate consequence that reliably follows its occurrence." Positive and negative reinforcement are both psychological processes that are known to strengthen behavior of individuals. In other words, they increase the chances of behavior recurring in the future. Each is distinguished by the way that consequences follow behavior. Positive reinforcement refers to when an individual performs good behavior and gets rewarded for said behavior. For example, both of my kids are potty-training. My oldest son did not have an accident last night, and this morning I let him pick out of the treat bin. Negative reinforcement refers to when an individual performs good behavior whenever something is taken away or avoided. For example, my oldest child likes to watch television. When he is not listening, I will revoke his screen-time privileges.
