Question

We had two different readings without, at first hand, much in common. First, Chavez's ethnographic approach taught us how gathering together becomes a powerful element for diasporic communities to derive meaning of the present while remembering the past. Robertson's historical approach, on the other hand, taught is how people getting together through music in the midst of loss, tragedy, and a sense of shame produced by a despicable xenophobic act can be productive even in captivity and under strict surveillance.

For your entry this week, I want you to try to find common themes between these two readings, especially around how music and musicking helps minorities in their plight. Finally, can we see any historical correlations between these two seemingly disparate groups in the way they are treated historically?

1. Alex Chavez, "Southern Borderland Music"

2. Marta Robertson, "Ballad for Incarcerated Americans: Second Generation Japanese American Musicking in World War II Camps.
