Students will critically engage with Stephanie Foo's memoir, What My Bones Know, to deepen their understanding of complex trauma, cultural identity, and the healing process. This assignment encourages personal reflection, critical analysis, and connection to broader themes of resilience and mental health. Ensure you have read What My Bones Know in its entirety, taking notes on key moments, quotes, and themes that resonate with you. After you have read the book, in a 3 page paper answer the thirteen questions in the back of the book. Each question answered should be no more than 5 sentences each.

1. What my bones open with the author in a session with her longtime therapist? What is your relationship with therapy? Have you ever been? If so, did you find it useful or helpful? Why or why not?

2. When Foo received her diagnosis of C-PTSD, she was both relieved and devastated. Why was naming her mental illness so important to her, and what did it change? What is the power of a diagnosis, in your opinion?

3. At the end of the prologue, Foo writes, "Every villain's redemption arc begins with their origin story." What do you think? She viewed herself as a villain in need of redemption.

4. Foo says that she gravitated toward journalism because it gave her a chance to "take feelings and injustices and even tragedies and figure out a way to shape them all into something purposeful." Do you have a passion that gives you a similar sense of purpose?

5. Foo writes that, in American culture, resilience, or "emotional toughness," is synonymous with success. 6. In chapter 8, Foo talks about something called the dread. Have you ever experienced something similar to her dread? How have you dealt with difficult feelings in your own life?

7. After being diagnosed with C-PTSD, Foo tries a lot of different therapies-EMDR, mushrooms, restorative yoga, mindful meditation, and more. Where these treatments effective? Have you ever tried any or these things? What was your experiences

8. Foo writes that after reading about C-PTSD and how it affects the brain, she began "losing faith" in her own mind. She says, "Every time I tried to touch a memory, doubts and questions multiplied around it, preventing me from being able to see my own past." 12. When the Covid-19 pandemic hits, Foo finds that she is calm and productive while everyone around her is panicking. How does she account for this? Why is she able to see her C-PTSD as an asset during this moment of global crisis?

13. At the end of the book, Foo writes, "Healing is never final." It is never perfection. "But along with the losses are the triumphs." Do you agree? Has her story changed your understanding of what healing means and what it looks like?
