An electrically driven pump operating at steady state is used to draw water from a pond. At the pump inlet the pressure is 1 bar, and the mass flow rate is 50 kg/s. The pump outlet pressure is 5 bars. To a close approximation the pump performance is adiabatic, and changes in kinetic and potential energy are negligible. Assume the cost of electricity is 8.9 cents per kW.h. Determine the hourly cost of running the pump if the pump efficiency is 80%.
