Project Success

As information management permeates nursing practice, educational curricula, and nursing science, the profession of nursing is being challenged to balance the need for understanding "meaningful use" of data and the need to provide cost-effective and efficient patient care. In its report The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) (2010) emphasizes the importance of nurses being a part of the selection, implementation, and execution of technology solutions for patient care in the twenty-first century.

Review the informatics KSA's and competencies on the website for Quality & Safety Education for Nurses. You can access the QSEN site at https://qsen.org.

Access the IOM online report on the future of nursing listed in this week's readings. In the "Search" box enter "Informatics." You can also access the file in the 'Doc Sharing' area. Review the sections in the IOM report that contains information on informatics in nursing practice.

Respond to the following:

• Using the information on the QSEN page, describe at least one information challenge and one knowledge challenge for nurses in the twenty-first century.
• Reflect on how you, as a future nurse informaticist, would address the nursing informatics challenge you selected using recommendations from the IOM report and the QSEN website.
