Ageism in America
Ageism, as defined by Merriam-Webster, is the prejudice or discrimination against a age-group and especially the elderly. Today we will be focusing on the prejudice and discrimination of older adults in the United States. Ageism could affect individual health by means of stress, depression, heart disease, etc. Such conditions could be a result of older adults internalizing the negative comments, messages, and stigmas from those made by others in person, in the media, in literature, etc, which could lead to further marginalization, which may lead to low self-esteem, withdrawal and physical decline in the individual. The purpose of this research paper will be to dissect and further understand what causes individuals to have these types of discriminatory pre-judgements towards older adults. My target population will be young adults, primarily those who have attended or are currently attending a university or college. By understanding the cause of these attitudes, one may be able to develop and possibly implement solutions that may be able to positively influence the thoughts of the target population.
