Data Management and Analytics
Assessment - Discovery and Preparation
Learning Outcome 1: Curate complex datasets from multiple sources to solve an analytics problem.
Learning Outcome 2: Prepare data ready for visual analysis and refining a problem.
Assessment Task
For this task, assume you are a data analytics consultant who is exploring a real-world problem through data. You must interpret and define the problem, then curate and prepare a suitable dataset to help with solving it. The analytical reasoning used in this process must be documented through a series of professional artefacts.
Please refer to the Instructions for details on how to complete this task.
Context
This assessment task mirrors the initial "discovery and preparation" phase of a professional analytics engagement. In this stage, consultants must navigate ambiguous problems, interpret stakeholder needs and make sound methodological decisions to prepare data for analysis.
Instructions
Create a consultant's brief that consists of three artefacts: (1) problem scoping with ‘How Might We' (HMW) questions; (2) a journey map; and (3) a reflective storyboard to demonstrate your analytical reasoning in preparing data to solve a real-world problem. Use Microsoft Whiteboard to document your process from problem definition to a clean, analysis-ready dataset.
Artefact 1: Problem Scoping
Choose one of the following methods to conduct your research:
Option A: Industry Engagement - Engage with an industry professional to identify and scope a genuine business problem.
Option B: AI-Assisted Stakeholder Simulation - Use an AI tool (e.g., CoPilot, ChatGPT) to simulate a stakeholder interview and refine a data-driven problem.
Synthesise the main insights from the interview and turn them into ‘How Might We' questions. You can use the following formula (Interaction Design Foundation, 2016):
Create a problem statement that clarifies the context, purpose and analytical direction. Include notes on ethical considerations and your proposed analytical approach. Get AI-free online assignment help by the best tutors.
Refer to Module 2: Learning Activity 2 - Project Scoping on Microsoft Whiteboard to help you to complete this artefact.
Artefact 2: Journey Map
Use the Simple Journey Map template on Microsoft Whiteboard to illustrate how you have identified, evaluated and prepared data relevant to your chosen problem.
Your journey map should visually capture the key stages of your decision-making process.
Refer to Module 3: Learning Activity 1 to help you to complete this artefact.
Artefact 3: Reflective Commentary
This could be a storyboard to visually summarise your data collection and preparation workflow and reasoning.
Discuss the key challenges, significant decisions (and your reasoning), how your understanding evolved and the limitations of your final dataset.
Refer to Module 3: Learning Activity 2 - Storyboarding on Microsoft Whiteboard to help you to complete this artefact.
