Consider the documentary Yellow Face and the related videos presented in class, along with the article "Asian Women in Film: No Joy, No Luck" by Jessica Hagedorn. Write an essay in which you argue whether Hollywood writers and directors have a social responsibility to avoid stereotyping ethnic characters.
Pick one of these positions (not a neutral stance): either Hollywood writers and directors DO have a social responsibility to avoid stereotyping ethnic characters, or Hollywood writers and directors DO NOT have a social responsibility to avoid stereotyping ethnic characters. (Do not use all capital letters in your essay--they are here for emphasis only).
To develop your position, brainstorm films that depict various ethnicities, and then determine whether the portrayals are damaging or benign. You might also consult Michael Omi's "In Living Color: Race and American Culture," Maintain your position while addressing the counterargument, and propose one or more solutions in your conclusion. Remain in 3rd person POV.
The essay should contain:
An introductory paragraph with a thesis statement and three supporting
Three body paragraphs that address the supporting details with specific evidence from Hagedorn, Omi, and/or credible external sources
A conclusion paragraph that summarizes the thesis statement and mentions the supporting details, along with a graceful component that wraps up the main theme of the essay.
The essay will be evaluated in terms of unity, support, coherence, and sentence skills. Use 8th edition MLA formatting to cite your sources both in-text and in the works cited list.
