The Main ACOTE (2011, Form B) Standards to be met include:

Explain the meaning and dynamics of occupation and activity including the interaction of areas of occupation, performance skills, performance patterns, activity demands, context(s) and environments, and client factors.

Articulate the importance of balancing areas of occupation with the achievement of health and wellness for the clients.

Explain the role of occupation in the promotion of health and the prevention of disease and disability for the individual, family and society.

Assignment Guidelines:

1. Fill in the Activity Pattern Chart (Thomas, p. 54) with the activities that you engage in during the week. (For example, cooking dinner, studying, shopping, doing laundry, etc.).

2. Color code the activities by their classifications:

• ADL: yellow

• IADL: orange

• Education: brown

• Work (both paid and volunteer): red

• Play & Leisure: blue

• Rest & Sleep: green

• Social Participation: purple

3. Calculate the total time spent in hours on each area.

4. Summarize your findings.

• Identify the areas that you engage in the most and the least.

• Identify the areas that you choose to do versus the areas that you must do

• Identify the areas that you like to do versus the areas that you do not like to do

5. Consider your individual culture, beliefs, values, interests and goals as well as your age, developmental stage, and capabilities and how they relate to your occupational performance. Complete the following points:

• Discuss your observations about the level of balance in your areas of occupation

• Discuss how the level of balance impacts your health and well-being

• Discuss what aspects of the activity patterns have positive and negative influences on your well-being.

• Discuss how creating balance in occupational engagement can lead to the promotion of health and disease prevention (refer to textbooks and cite your work).
