Assignment 3: Code of Ethics and Discipline Procedures.  Summarize the Code of Ethics procedures in your State (FL) and District (Miami-Dade County Public Schools). Define the role of the Education Practices Commission with regard to authority to discipline, dealing with complaints against teachers and administrators, and penalties. Include the district requirements of the district notification to the state on disciplinary proceedings. (Complete in a Narrative in a Word document).

Case Study Assignment 4:

A teacher of special needs students transports five students to a local grocery store as part of work training for special needs students transitioning to adult life. The teacher has a bus license and drives the students using the school's activity bus. The teacher is also accompanied by a paraprofessional.

After the bus returns to the school, the teacher, paraprofessional and students return to the classroom.  After an hour, the teacher notices that one of the students is missing and realizes that she didn't account for this child when returning to school.  She gets coverage for her class, and drives back to the grocery store to try and find the child.  She is unsuccessful.  After another 2 hours, she notifies administration of what occurred. The child is later found by the Sheriff's Department a mile from the grocery store walking on the side of the road.  The parents file a lawsuit against the District for Neglect.

An investigation occurs finding the teacher was neglectful in her duties and endangering the child. She is placed on the Board agenda to be terminated.  She has 22 years of successful teaching with no previous history of problems. The Union grieves the decision, saying the District failed to follow Progressive Discipline and the teacher should receive no discipline. Based on District Policy, will the District or Union prevail?  Why?

Discussion Questions Assignment 5:

Discussion Topic- Progressive Discipline is a term used to describe consequences becoming more and more severe as an employer continues to violate district policies. Describe the steps in your district's (Miami-Dade County Public School) progressive discipline plan. Be specific, In addition, does the plan accommodate employees' actions which may be severe enough to skip steps in the progressive discipline plan for more sever consequences.

Discussion - During an interview the interviewer asks the candidate if he/she can perform the essential functions of the job. The interviewer also goes on to ask the candidate if he or she is married, and that the company is concerned about hiring married people because the job entails a great deal of travel and this can have an impact on an employee's personal life. Are these lines of questioning appropriate? Why or why not? What can a company ask and what can a company "not" ask during and interview?
