Case Study:
Last week, a promising musician was brutally murdered in a homophobic crime in uMlazi. It is believed that 23-year-old Lindokuhle Cele was killed at a butchery for allegedly being gay. Cele was stabbed several times while the community watched. The alleged killer was arrested the next day and will appear in court for a bail hearing on 17 December. Bongani Bingwa chats to the deceased's aunt Nombuso Cele and LGBTI Forum spokesperson Mpho Buntse to weigh in on the matter
"We are trying but Londokuhle's death is difficult for us, we cannot cope. Lindokuhle went to the butchery to buy meat, while he was waiting, this guy came and took a knife and started stabbing him continuously".
- Nombuso Cele, Lindokuhle's aunt
"She says people were watching the incident whilst it happened and the perpetrator continued to stab Cele until the knife got stuck in Cele's eye.
We want to plead to South Africans that they need to accept people as they are. People have the right to live life the way they want to as long as they are not interfering with other people".
- Nombuso Cele, Lindokuhle's aunt
Buntse says the Cele family needs to know that the LGBTI community stands with them during this difficult time and the forum will ensure that justice is served.
- Explain how the concept of "diffusion of responsibility" relates to the action or inaction of bystanders during the murder of Lindokuhle Cele?
- Are prosocial behaviour and aggression opposites? Why or why not? Discuss the concepts of motivation, specific actions, and effects concerning prosocial behaviour and aggression, further provide examples from the case to support your reasoning.
- To what extent can social contagion and schadenfreude be used as an explanation of why the observers did not intervene?
- Explain what is meant by the frustration-aggression hypothesis. Using this hypothesis, explain the actions of the murderer in the case study.
- Reflect on and describe a situation where you engaged in either prosocial or antisocial behaviour. Further, provide an academically sound and theoretically grounded explanation of your motivation for engaging in this type of behaviour.
