In 1999, scientists reported that a particular variant of theangiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene was associated withsuperior physical endurance. The variant, known as the ACEinsertion polymorphism, was found to be present in a higherproportion of elite endurance athletes, especially long distancerunners, than in the general population.

Vignette:

Marathon University is offering full-tuition scholarships and aguaranteed spot on the varsity track team to high-school sophomoreswho "pass" a genetic test. If the parents sign a consent form,University doctors will screen them for the ACE insertionpolymorphism.

Discussion points:
1 Is it likely that a single gene determines physical endurance?
2 Are other genes likely to be important?
3 What other factors determine whether a child will grow up to bean elite endurance athlete?
4 Should parents be allowed to use genetic information to make decisions that will limit their children's choices in adulthood?
5 What else should MU do if it is concerned about the well being ofthe future student-athlete?
