SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGION RESEARCH PAPER

Students will write a 5-6-page (double spaced; 12-point Times New Roman font; 1-inch margins) research paper that uses sociological theories and concepts to analyze the website of a religious congregation. Your task is simple: 1) locate the website of a religious congregation you are interested in studying. The congregation you choose can be from any religious tradition in any part of the world. 2) Review the information on the website. Most congregations have info describing their beliefs, history, and events. 3) Interpret what you learned about this congregation through the lens of sociological concepts, theorists, and ideas. Apply what you learned in this class explain what you have learned about the congregation you have chosen to study.

At the most basic level, you might consider interpreting your congregation by asking the following questions: What religious tradition is this congregation? What might Marx, Weber, or Durkheim say if they were studying this church? Does it appear to be a "strict" church"? Does this church appear to be evidence for or against secularization? Obviously, there are many more ways of applying class concepts to interpret your congregation. These are just a few examples.
