SYSTEM ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

Objectives: To apply the object-oriented methodology for analysis of information systems development in a case study.

Chemist Warehouse Group

The Chemist Warehouse Group is Australia's largest pharmacy retailer, operating more than 500 stores nationwide with a strong growth trajectory. Its business model combines competitive pricing and high-volume sales with professional service and trusted health advice. The group is owned and operated by Australian-registered pharmacists, and all products are approved for sale in Australia by the relevant authorities.

Chemist Warehouse provides a wide range of health-related products and services both in-store and online. It also dispenses prescribed medications to patients across Australia. Accordingly, the business serves two main customer groups:

Retail customers who purchase products in-store or online.
Patients who require prescribed medications, either occasionally or on a regular basis.

Each store is structured around two main divisions:

Pharmacy Services - Dispensing medications, providing pharmacological advice to multidisciplinary healthcare teams, and monitoring patient drug therapies. These services are delivered by quali ed pharmacists.
Retail Sales - Offering a wide range of health-related products from various suppliers, organised into departments such as Vitamins, Beauty, Fragrances, Baby Care, Medicines, Dental, Household, Hair Care, and Protein. Get expert-level assignment help in any subject.
Web customers need to create an account, which stores their contact details and their nominated username and password for return visits. User login or account creation is required before marking orders.
The online product orders are either arranged for local pick-up or delivered via courier at an additional fee. Customers can make their payment by cash, cheque and credit cards in local stores. However, online purchases must be paid for by credit card for delivery.

The management wants to add more features to its existing website. The website provides not only the online ordering facilities utilising a typical shopping cart and checkout model, but also more sectors such as promotions, introduction of new products, and the news of classi ed products such as Baby, Beauty, Home Health, Health advice, and Wellness programs etc.
A VIP membership registration function is also planned, designed to build customer loyalty through a "Frequent Buyers" program that rewards users with discount points and exclusive offers.

Payments

Business revenue is generated through point-of-sale (POS) transactions, including prescription dispensing.

Customers can pay for in-store purchases using cash, cheque, bank cards, Visa, or MasterCard. Payments made with American Express incur a 2% surcharge. Online purchases must be paid for by credit card.
Store Management and Operations
Each store has a local manager responsible for day-to-day operations, including:

Maintaining inventory by checking stock balances daily and monitoring high-demand products.
Ordering products from the central warehouse, receiving deliveries, and updating the inventory database.
Submitting weekly sales reports to headquarters (HQ).

Business Analysis and Promotion

The business offers special prices to attract customers. That is, the Retail prices may vary depending on sessions, promotional periods, or special events.
Central management (HQ) collects weekly sales and inventory data to analyse customer behaviour, forecast demand, and support decision-making. An income analysis across product categories is also performed to inform planning and promotional strategies.
It has been observed that a simple reporting system built on the operational database at individual local stores is insuf cient. Therefore, an enterprise information system is required to assist managers with advanced data analytics.
As an Information Systems Analyst, you have been employed to develop a conceptual model for Chemist Warehouse's information management system. This integrated system will support business intelligence and enhance decision-making. Your rst task is to demonstrate an understanding of the business processes and context to develop a conceptual model of the system.
