Problem
The intersection between paedophilia and generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology is becoming an increasingly criminological issue. The Internet Watch Foundation, a global registered charity based in England, grimly revealed that freely available artificial intelligence software is being used by paedophiles to create child sexual abuse material (CSAM). They added that online paedophile discussion forums on the dark web were being utilised by these offenders to not only share such heinous images, but to engage in technical discussions on how to efficiently exploit AI tools to achieve the most realistic images (Milmo, 2023). In the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) from 2013, a "paedophile" is described as someone who experiences sexual attraction to children, regardless of their gender. This is categorised as a paraphilic disorder, also known as "paedophilic disorder." As per this definition, an adult (defined as age 16 and up) who, over a period of at least 6 months, exhibits recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child or children (generally age 13 years or younger), is diagnosed with a paedophilic disorder. However, the precise origins of why some individuals are sexually attracted to children remain unclear, leading to ongoing debates in the field of social science regarding whether there are underlying biological factors or predispositions that contribute to paedophilia and similar deviant behaviors (Stephens, 2019). • Analyze the relevance of the biological positivism theory as a framework for understanding and defining criminality, and appraise its significance in comprehending deviant behaviors or tendencies, such as paedophilia.
