The Case Study Mirbat College (MC) is one of the leading higher education institutions in the Sultanate of Oman. The college is home to over 2000 Students from within Oman and GCC. The College offers UG and PG programs in different areas of Information technology and Management. The College was established in the year 2010 and was one of the first colleges to introduce IT education in the Sultanate. To manage the student's data within the college MC started using its first Student information system. The Information system was used for keeping the exam-related details of each student.
The academic staff used the system to enter exam-related data in the system the exam office use to create different results-related reports from the information system. The Marking of attendance was done manually by the faculty which was a tedious task and the reports generated as a result of the manual marking of attendance had a lot of errors. The MC management decided to automate the attendance module and incorporate it into the information system. After automating the attendance systems in the information systems several attendance-related issues were sorted out. The registration of the modules at the start of the semester was also done manually and was a time-consuming task. Students and faculty use to spend a lot of time and energy on module registration at the start of each semester. For online registration of the module at the start of each semester, the new subsystem was added to the information system providing the student the option of module registration at the beginning of the semester.
The students were also provided the option later to add or drop the module in the first week of the new semester. The Management of MC has added reporting module which provides detailed several reports program wise which is used by the academics to analyze the different trends in the analysis of students' performance. A separate software uses the data from the student information system to analyze details, like improved student performance, weak student performance, module wise performance, the performance of the student as per the assessment, and other criteria. New criteria can also be added for the analysis as per the requirement. This is Information from this system is helping MC to identify the weak area and the reasons for weak performances by the student in different modules and programs. The MC management is addressing the weak areas identified in the analysis.
Case Study Questions:
1. Discuss in detail what problems were encountered by Mirbat college for not having a complete information system. Identify in detail what was the impact of the non-availability of a complete information system in the college.
2. Discuss what new modules were added to the information system in detail and what the college management was able to achieve with the help of the new modules/subsystems.
3. Critically analyze the information system identified above and identify In your opinion which new module/subsystem can be developed and incorporated into the current information system of the college. Discuss in detail how it would be helpful to the organization.
