Key Assessment:
For this key assessment, you will advocate for young children and the early childhood profession (NAEYC Standard 6e) by demonstrating your understanding and knowledge of health, safety and nutrition for young children.
For your key assessment you will be creating a brochure, newsletter or pamphlet for families and caregivers. Your key assessment will distinguish aspects of quality in programs for young children as related to health, safety and nutrition; acknowledging the value of collaboration with diverse families and community (NAEYC Standards 2a, 2b, & 2c).
As discussed throughout this course, there are developmentally appropriate activities and resources that maximize the mental and physical health of young children in programs, as well as the importance of safety measures that encourage developmentally appropriate growth while minimizing harm or risk. (NAEYC Standard 4b).
Your key assessment should effectively communicate and support diverse families and caregivers the importance of health, safety and nutrition both in school and at home (NAEYC Standards 2a, 2b & 2c).
Section 1:
Importance of health, safety & nutrition topics:
Thorough and complete information of your three separate topics based on research, which must be cited from various scholarly materials (no blogs or Wikipedia and use varied resources, not all the same) in your newsletter, brochure or pamphlet.
Please choose multiple scholarly resources to cite your information (minimum of three cited, importance statements).
Ex: Health-"Hand washing is perhaps the single most effective control measure against the spread of communicable and infectious illness in child care and school environments."(Schulte et al., 2012). People frequently touch their eyes, nose, and mouth without even realizing it. Germs can get into the body through the eyes, nose and mouth and make us sick. Germs from unwashed hands can get into foods and drinks while people prepare or consume them. Germs can multiply in some types of foods or drinks, under certain conditions, and make people sick. Germs from unwashed hands can be transferred to other objects, like handrails, table tops, or toys, and then transferred to another person's hands. Removing germs through handwashing therefore helps prevent diarrhea and respiratory infections and may even help prevent skin and eye infections. (Center for Disease Control, 2018). When kids come into contact with germs, they can become infected just by touching their eyes, nose, or mouth. And once they're infected, it's usually just a matter of time before the whole family comes down with the same illness (Kids Health, 2018).
