Violence Against Women Final Paper Assignment

Analysis of News Final: The purpose of this assignment is to have you perform a feminist critique of the way violence operates/is communicated/is enforced in an event that is happening in our lives. Pick something CONTEMPORARY from the newspaper, TV, or social media and make an argument about what type of gendered violence is occurring in the "story." Use the articles from class to support your claims about that which you are analyzing. Explain your position by backing up your claims with scholarly evidence from class and use four (4) outside articles.(4 scholarly articles). The goal is to convince the reader to adopt your feminist perspective about the violence occurring in the "story." What is this "story" telling us about the larger discourses surrounding violence against women and power, gender, race, class, ability, etc? For this assignment you will be evaluated on your writing skills, your attention to persuasive appeals, and your use of evidence (focusing on particular parts of the "story" and relating them back to the theory from the course and external articles). This assignment will be 5- 7pgs (not including cover/reference page) and should contain an introduction, body, conclusion, a cover page and reference page all in APA, and combine knowledge of all concepts discussed this semester.

Have an introduction with context about what you will analyze- summarize the story (for example maybe you could analyze how women are being affected by COVID in particular ways).

Have an explicit thesis that explains what your position is and what you will claim (main points).

Provide a literature review of the theoretical concepts you will focus on. It is best to do this in themes (for instance you might want to focus on intersectionality and provide summaries of how authors talk about/with each other about this theory and then explain how you will be utilizing the theory). The literature review should use articles from our class, but you should also pull other academic/scholarly articles from valid website and put them in conversation with the articles you are using to analyze your news event.

Have main points of analysis (where you apply feminist theory to a particular news story. For instance, your group has decided to analyze women in prison during COVID. You will make claims about it and demonstrate those claims with evidence [examples from the news article] and support your analysis by using/citing feminist theory to extend those claims.)

Have a conclusion that doesn't only summarize, but that points toward implications and why the reader should care to rhetorically analyze your research object. In other words, point to the bigger picture.

Have a cover page and a reference page in compliance with APA.

As always, this should be in full sentences with minimal spelling or grammatical errors, in times new roman, 12 pt. font, double spaced, 1inch margins.
