Question: In the field of criminal investigations, you may be asked to analyze forensic data, including case notes from cold cases and/or violent crimes. This analysis often requires assessing the scientific methodologies applied during the investigations to determine their reliability, accuracy, and relevance to the case. By evaluating both the evidence and the methods used to obtain it, you can identify overlooked insights, reconstruct timelines of events, and strengthen the overall integrity of future investigations.

Imagine you are a criminal justice or security professional working as a private investigator. Your superior has asked you to present a post-mortem evaluation of a major case investigation to the review board. The purpose of this evaluation is to assess the scientific methodologies applied during the investigation, highlight successes and shortcomings, and extract lessons learned. This presentation will serve as a training tool for colleagues, reinforcing how the scientific method can and should be applied when methodically investigating major crimes. When discussing investigative evidence, you may also refer to concepts related to data mining where appropriate.

Assessment Deliverable

Create a 12- to 15-slide presentation in which you assess scientific methodologies applied to your selected investigation. Include the following in your presentation:

Provide a postmortem case summary.
Evaluate the scientific methodology used in the investigation (retrospective), and incorporate the following:
Include evidence of observations.
Formulate a hypothesis.
Use the hypothesis to create predictions. Where statistical validation is discussed, concepts related to hypothesis testing and goodness of fit may provide useful background.
Describe the experimental testing of predictions.
Describe the instruments and equipment crucial in solving this investigation and their alignment with the methodology.
Describe the behavioral and/or geographic profiling methods and how they fit with the methodology.
Explain whether this methodology was the right fit for the case or if a different methodology would have been better. Explain your reasoning.
Include a title slide, a reference slide, and detailed speaker notes of at least 50 words per slide. Note: These slides do not contribute to the overall slide count. When preparing your slides, following an effective oral presentation structure can improve clarity.
Cite at least 2 peer-reviewed, scholarly, or similar references.
Format your citations and references according to APA guidelines.
