Case Study: Sociology of the Family is a subfield in sociology, in which sociologists, researchers and academics, study the family structure as a social institution of socialization from several sociological perspectives. Family and kinship is found to be interesting by many individuals (outside of sociology). This course is key in Sociology majors because family is a pertinent unit to society; we all have a family (either defined as a family as it meets the socially constructed definition of family in United States or one that is of it's own definition of 'family'). We study family for many reasons, including for purpose of understanding ourselves and others. Learners take a look at family in the context of something greater than just our own family unit, so that they will have a better understanding and relatability to family as a social unit and therefore allows us to understand ourselves better. Leaners study family to better understand our society and other families; and therefore able to understand and recognize similarities and differences.
