Description, Task, Scope -
GREEN BUILDING PILLAR: a sustainable technique or strategy providing essential support for achieving a GREEN BUILDING or an ecological centered building type. This learning activity involves the investigation of GLOBAL Sustainable Solutions in the Built Environment. Each Student will search for a minimum of five specific GREEN Techniques that are utilized in the design, rehabilitation, or retrofit of a specific building, building interiors or site. The GREEN technique will represent the keyword, which will form the focus of the students' individual case study. The student will select five keywords (GREEN Techniques), one from each category listed below:
1. Sustainable Site
2. Water Efficiency
3. Passive Energy Efficiency must also include weather patterns
4. Active Energy Efficiency
5. Materials & Goods: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rapidly Renewable
The above categories are based on the course text chapters and the Power Point Presentations Lectures. Within each chapter/topic keywords of various GREEN Techniques with brief explanations can be found. Each student's case study's will demonstrate through words, charts, tables and images, the GREEN Technique (keyword), the corresponding category, the definition of the keyword, and other related data including sources and footnotes.
Each case study will focus on one keyword - GREEN Technique - from each of the categories (topics) listed above. There will be five case study investigations in all. Each case studies will be created on the given template which will include the following data: project name; location; GREEN Building Strategy (keyword); the definition of the strategy (Keyword); building image of the strategy; drawing or sketch detail; advantages and disadvantages of the specific strategy / technique; physiological, psychological and economic benefits; charts, data, or diagram showing the benefits in visual form; data source (url address); and conclusions (personal summarization of the investigation). The Global Sustainable Solutions Case Studies, can be created using power point or keyword software and then printed and compiled into a Spiral Bound A4 size booklet. In addition you may be called on in class to discuss the keyword/GREEN Technique. Each student's GREEN Building Case Study GREEN Technique should come from a different source, in other words, no two alike; and, each should come from a credible source that validates the Building's sustainable features: i.e.: Restorative Environmental Designed Building / Living Building Challenge / Adaptive Reuse Rehabilitation Building / LEED certified Building/ Pearl Rating, Bream Building, Climate House, or equivalent.
Process / Guidelines -
Follow the following process to help organize and format your work:
GSS Case Study Prospects
Search and Select:
1. Utilize the internet, design/architecture magazines or the CUD LIB GUIDE: to find a built project that demonstrates the GREEN technique / keyword to be discussed in the case study. Check to ensure that the gathered data and information you collect comes from a reputable source. In other words your literature findings should come from a published work in which the building has earned one of the following GREEN ratings or equivalent: LEED, BREAM, Estidama, Living Building Challenge, Casa Clima or other rating systems.
2. Ensure that your building selections have drawings or sketches: Plans / Sections / Elevations, Details, diagrams showing the sustainable technique, etc.
3. BEFORE commencing the next steps, gain approval for your chosen GREEN Techniques case study keyword from the Instructor.
General Requirements for all GSS Case Studies:
4. Prepare five separate GSS Pillars with the following:
a. Provide the Buildings Basic Design information:
i. What is the Building's/Projects NAME?
ii. WHERE is it built (location)?
iii. WHEN was it Built?
iv. WHO were the Architect's / Interior Designers?
v. WHAT is the philosophy of the architects/ Interior Designers or design concept behind the project?
b. IMAGES: An image of the Building | image of the keyword strategy | miscellaneous supporting images. Ensure that the image clearly relates to the topic. IE: if you are discussing solar panels show an image of the solar panels in place; if strategy involves a green roof, show the green roof in place.
c. DEFINITION of the KEYWORD: define the specific sustainable strategy or GREEN Building Pillar. What is the overall purpose/goal of the specific GREEN Building Technique? In some instances you may need to define additional keywords that correspond to the Main Sustainable Strategy.
d. ANALYSIS the Building in terms of the specific strategy. Determine How the sustainable strategy is used to solve environmental impact issues. Include detailed descriptions to clarify the process for achieving the strategy. Discuss the elements and processes used. Also refer to Examples of other items to analyze and discuss that are related to Specific GREEN Building Techniques (see below).
e. Advantages vs. Disadvantages of the specific sustainable technique.
f. BENEFITS: The Physiological, Psychological and Economic benefits to humans.
g. DATA, CHARTS, Diagrams, Weather Patterns: show any related data that will graphic convey supporting information about the Sustainable Strategy. Passive Energy Efficient Strategy should include weather patterns as well as the projects primary winds and solar path + site orientation.
h. Misc. RELEVANT data (see below).
i. Conclusions summarize your own original conclusions of the investigation.
j. Cite the Source: List and Reference all images & data Sources using footnotes. The footnotes should be inserted at the end of the presentation. Footnotes will include a superscript number and the corresponding source. (url address or other source).
5. Here are examples of other items that should be considered / included in the case study depending upon the keyword -GREEN Technique - that is chosen:
a. If the technique is a GREEN Roof or GREEN Façade, thoroughly explain the specific type of GREEN ROOF. Is it an EXTENSIVE or INTENSIVE GREEN Roof, or is it semi-intensive? Is it suitable for the climate? What species of plants were used and why? Include a drawing that shows example of the structure of the GREEN Roof.
b. If the strategy is a Walkable Community, graphically demonstrate that radius parameters (circle) that determines the walkable community limits. The actual building site would be at the center. Also show with markers and a legend where the basic services are located within the radius limits.
c. Does the sustainable strategies address a climate issue? If yes, than relate the Building to Its Environment: What is the Climate of the site? What are the geographic and bio-climatic considerations that the building has to mitigate?
For example: Is it in a hot climate? Cold Climate? Wet Climate? Dry Climate? Consider the daily, and seasonal climate. Demonstrate how weather patterns, solar paths, solar days, precipitation, and primary winds determine which sustainable strategies can take advantage of the site's location and climate.
d. If the strategy involves water efficiency through the plumbing fixtures discuss all the various fixtures used. Include a chart/diagram to show the water savings. Include any relevant data.
e. Is the project using energy efficient sources? Explain how? (there may be more than one energy conserving source in the building) Is it a passive of active technique? Is it a renewable energy source, energy conserving, cost saving? Does the sustainable strategy generate more energy than it uses? Demonstrate through charts and tables.
f. What resources (materials) were used to build it? Are the materials sustainably harvested? Are the materials reused, reclaimed, pre-consumer or post-consumer recycled or recyclable content? Does the material come from a rapidly renewable source and is it sourced locally or regionally? Does the material emit low or no emissions? How does the material impact the local / regional / Global ecosystem? Is the embodied energy considered in the project. Did the project use material and sources that meet Cradle to Cradle Criteria?
