Basic Economic Issues Forecast Paper Assignment -

Learning Objectives - This assignment will allow you to: Apply the economics you are learning to a real world market.

Assignment Overview - Your success in the prediction market game is based on your ability to predict future crude oil prices, especially the price on June 26th. Your forecast paper is a 3 to 4 page, 1000 to 1500 word paper, justifying your final trade or forecast. The paper should be double spaced with one-inch margins. You are required to cite the Wall Street Journal (10 articles minimum). Some of the articles you cite may talk explicitly about the world oil market. However, some of the articles must be about economic factors that you believe will influence the world price of oil even though the price of oil is not explicitly discussed in the article. For example, when a large economy slides into a recession, demand for oil and thus oil prices usually decrease. So, any article about the US or other major economies slowing down may suggest a lower future price of oil, all else equal.

The economic content of the paper must consist of an analysis of:

  • Factors within the US that affect the supply of oil
  • Factors outside of the US that affect the supply of oil
  • Factors within the US that affect the demand for oil
  • Factors outside of the US that affect the demand for oil
  • A prediction of what the price of oil will be on June 26th that is based on the factors that you identified as affecting the supply and demand of oil throughout the world.
