Essay: Analysis of the counselling service provision to a specific client group
Assessment task link to unit learning outcomes:
1. Understand the many forms of professional counseling.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of the variety of settings and populations in which counselling takes place.
3. Demonstrate familiarity with counselling diverse client populations.
4. Distinguish between the individual, couples and group therapy.
5. Understand, differentiate and critically appraise the varied forms of counseling.
6. Acquire practical counselling experience by learning in the field.
Details of task: Choose a client group (if it is not one appearing in the Possible Client Groups list on Moodle, please check with the lecturer if it is a suitable client group). By 'client group', we are not meaning the issue that might bring them to counselling (e.g. depression or family problems). You are choosing a group defined by age, or ethnicity, or sexuality, or gender, or socio-economic status, or religion etc.
For a broad client group, you may want to also choose a specific setting (e.g. the elderly in an aged care facility, adolescents in a youth refuge, a specific migrant group seeking career guidance). Research the needs of the client group. This research should include investigating a service which offers counselling to that client group, and discussing in your essay what you learned about how well (or not) the service meets the need of the client group.
Issues you should cover (not all will be relevant to every group) include:
a. What are typical presenting problems?
b. What characteristics of this group may need to be considered, when providing a counselling service?
c. How would you address those characteristics?
d. What specific training might be helpful or even necessary, in order to work effectively with this group?
e. Ethical / legal issues particularly relevant to this group?
f. Is this a group who typically accesses counselling services? If not, discuss why that might be. And what steps could be taken to improve their access? (these possible steps could be by the individual counsellor, by the service, by the wider community, or all three).
g. Do you consider that you belong to this group? (e.g. if your client group is same-sex-attracted young people, do you identify as belonging to this group?)
If you do, what might be benefits and drawbacks of this, if you were working as a counsellor with this group?
If you don't, what would you need to consider, in working with them?
