One of the videos explains how "American policies engineered our segregated homes" while government policies also engineered our integrated workplaces. Another explains the history of red lining and how cities became segregated, in order to avoid "inharmonious groups that would lower property values."

Thinking about the impact of social structure (specifically race, class, and gender) in your life, please speak to at least two of the following questions:

1. How does the fact that red lining happened affect your understanding of how social structure shapes individual family's choice of where to live? Was the "white flight" that contributed to inequality an individual or a structured choice? How would you make the argument that it is both?

2. What do you think of the idea that racism/sexism/classism may be an individual choice, but it is it *also* a result of living in a socially structured world in which social facts and social forces shape the culture into which people are socialized? Thinking about how these 'isms' are both individual and structural, please describe an example from your own life that illustrates their dual nature (individual and also collective).
