Star Patterns: The goals of this project are (1) to allow the night sky to become more familiar (2) To use the Atl-Az coordinate system and the hand angle measuring tricks and (3) Learn a few Constellations Part 1: Make up some of your own constellations 1. Always record date, time, place and sky conditions 2. Pick a patch of sky, large or small, with a recognizable pattern of stars in it. What does the pattern remind you of? Name it. Make a sketch of it. 3. Specify (a) Altitude and Azimuth and (b) the angular size of your constellation, using fists, etc. to gauge angles. Record numbers on sketch and in report Part 2: Reconcile your "private universe" with that of the mostly Babylonian-Greek-Roman constellations that are now "standard". 1. Use a starfinder (planisphere) 2. Set the time and date 3. Orient the star finder overhead and find your private constellation 4. Indicate on your sketch (or make a new one) where the greek constellations lie in relation to yours 5. Whose version is more memorable?
