Question

The challenging behaviors that are identified in my functional assessment interview were aggression to others, yelling, and flopping. He also engages in SIB (biting) and elopement. The hypothesized functions of these behaviors is escape from demands and denied access to tangibles. For the controlled condition the client will be able to a preferred activity and there will be do demands placed during this time and the staff will give the client as much attention as possible. For the testing condition, demands will be placed every minute and if the client engages in aggression to others, yelling or flopping the demand will be immediately removed until this problem behavior stops. An intervention I would like to implement is to use functional communication training to help decrease these problem behaviors because the client will be able to tell us why he doesn't want to do something instead of engaging in aggression, SIB, elopement, yelling, and flopping. The article I found was by Durand and Carr and they examined how well having functional communication works to decrease problem behaviors, but they also stated how well functional communication generalizes to all environments for the client and all around helps the client will many behaviors.
