A 5 ft^3 tank containing steam at 14.7 psia, 1% quality, is fitted with a relief valve. Heat is transferred to the tank from a large heat source at 500 F. when the pressure in the tank reaches 300 psia, the relief valve opens and saturated vapor at 300 psia is throttled across the valve and discharged at 14.7 psia pressure. This process continues until the quality in the tank reaches 90%. After drawing a neat and clear schematic of the geometry with appropriate conditions, (a) Calculate the mass discharged from the tank (b) Determine the heat transfer to the tank during the process.
the adjoining figure illustrates a piston-cylinder arrangement. this cylinder contains helium at 21oc and 1.379 mpa.
Assuming saturated properties out of the evaporator and condenser
What is the composition of the alloy and what is the temperature at which the first solid phase solidifies? (Estimates rounding to convenient numbers are sufficient.)
How will notches and holes affect the deflection of a cantilever beam? ie. increase or decrease? (Please provide citations)
many bridge designs today contain simple geometrical components but are constructed into complex ways to ensure that
Find the transfer function for the following impulse response
find a) velocity distribution in the film b) shear stress distribution c) volumetric rate of flow d) average velocity. assume the flow is steady and laminar.
Calculate the magnitude of the moment acting at the build-in end and specify the orientation of the moment vector relative to the principal centroidal axes of the section with the aid of a sketch and determine the stresses at each corner of the bu..
Describe on your own words the three strengthen mechanism for metals (i.e. grain size reduction, solid solution strengthening and strain hardening). Be sure to explain how dislocations are involved in each of the strengthening techniques.
In an air-water vapor mixture at 30°C, the partial pressure of the water vapor is 1.5kPa, and the partial pressure of the dry air is 100.5kPa. What is the relative humidity of the air-water vapor mixture?
If the maximum shear stress is limited to one-half of its yield strength and the fillet radius is 0.3 in, what is the maximum torque that can be applied? What power could be transmitted by a similar shaft rotating at 400 rpm?
Determine the number of revolutions that the motor executes in a) reaching its rated speed, b) coasting to rest.
